When we talk about iconic sportswear, the Nike Field General often gets overshadowed by its more famous siblings. I did not know anything about this sneaker until it was released in February. Yet, this football trainer has a rich history and a unique story worth celebrating.
First hitting the shelves in 1982, the Nike Field General quickly became a staple on the feet of football legends like Archie Manning and Dan Fouts. Its design, performance, and recent revival make it a compelling piece of Nike’s storied past and present.
Nike Field General Origins
Back in the early ’80s, Nike was already making waves with its innovative approach to athletic footwear. The Nike Field General was no exception. It was designed specifically for the gridiron warriors of football, offering a blend of comfort and functionality that was unmatched at the time.
The shoe’s standout feature was its rubber lugged outsole, which provided exceptional stability and traction on the field. This was crucial for players needing to make quick cuts and maintain grip under the toughest conditions.
The upper was a mix of textile with leather overlays at the forefoot and heel, delivering durability and support where it was needed most. Adding to its breathability, the Field General sported mesh underlays and a mesh toe box.
Visually, the shoe was striking. The large Swoosh on both the lateral and medial sides announced it Nike heritage proudly. The design was complete with Nike branding on the heel and tongue.
The Dissapearance and Resurgence
After its initial release, the Nike Field General fades into the background. It became a forgotten gem in Nike’s vast archive. In February, fans of the classic got a surprise.
The Nike Field General made a return when the original colorway was released on February 29th. This was followed by a fresh orange and white colorway in May. This rekindled a love for the vintage trainer.
The Nike x Union LA: A Modern Reimagination
Fast forward to June 27th, and the Field General is once again in the spotlight, thanks to a collaboration with Union LA. Known for their creative takes on iconic sneakers like the Jordan and the Cortez, Union LA brings a new life to the Field General with three unique colorways.
Union LA Shimmer
- Colorway: Shimmer/Silt Red/Particle Beige Dynamic Pink
- Style Code: FQ9003-200
This version is a visual delight, featuring a light pink textile overlay paired with brown visible mesh. The tonal midsole carries the “Union” branding on the lateral heel, adding a touch of exclusivity. Co-branding on the tongue, along with a Union hang tag and special packaging, make this a must-have for collectors.
The Shimmer pair released with little fan fare. It sat on Union’s site for a while before it eventually sold out. July 24th, there was a restock with pairs still available. Union LA is your best chance at getting a pair for retail.
Union LA Black Noir
- Colorway: Black/Dark Base Grey/Off Noir/Photo Blue
- Style Code: FQ9003-001
For those who prefer a more subdued look, the black colorway is perfect. The upper and mesh are both in tonal black, but it’s the contrasting blue accents that steal the show. They provide just the right amount of pop, and the contrasting gum mid and outsole add a layer of sophistication.
The Black Noir pair saw a limited release, which meant a little hype. The only way to grab a pair was via an online raffle. While retail was $120, the resell market is going for at least twice that, depending on your size.
Union LA Ivory
- Colorway: Ivory/Light Orewood Brown/Summit White/Bright Mandarin
- Style Code: FQ9003-100
Rounding out the trio is a summer-ready pair in mostly white. Bright orange accents catch the eye and add a vibrant touch, while the black midsole offers a striking contrast. This pair is sure to become a go-to for warm-weather styling.
Union LA will be releasing the Shimmer and Ivory silhouettes, with the black colorway available through raffles at APB, Social Status, and A Ma Maniere. This collaboration is not just a nod to the past but a bold step into the future, blending the Field General’s classic elements with contemporary flair.
