On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the MLB color barrier.

April 15, 2022, marked the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s barrier-breaking game. This marked the first time an African American played a Major League Baseball game. This Nike Dunk Low pays homage to that day and Jackie Robinson.

A Little About Jackie Robinson History

Prior to his MLB debut, Robinson was a standout athlete at John Muir High School. He played varsity level in baseball, football, basketball, and track. After high school, Robinson attended UCLA, where he played the same four sports and was the first to receive varsity letters in all four sports.

After graduating college Jackie Robinson was drafted by the United States Military serving in the Army. Robinson attended Officer Candidate School (OCS). upon completion, OCS Robinson was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

Robinson spent some time coaching college basketball when he completed his military service in 1944. It was not until 1945, Robinson found his way back to baseball when he played in the Negro Baseball League. In 1946 he moved on to the minor leagues and in 1947 Robinson was called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers. He made his major league debut on April 15, 1947, to a crowd of approximately 26,000.

The Sneaker Drop

The Dunk features Robinson’s number 42 on the ankle.

After some delays, we finally got a drop on July 19, 2022. The sneaker had a retail price tag of $130. Although I paid almost 4 four times more than retail once I got the sneaker in hand it was worth it. The writing on the show features Robinson’s famous phrase “I am not concerned with you liking me or disliking me…All I ask is that you respect me as a human being”.

The colorway is done in race blue and sail. The midsole is white with racer blue stitching that really pops. The outsole is done in a simple black. The insole is racer blue with Robinson’s famous phrase. Throughout the year we got many dunk releases with sub-par leather, but the leather quality of this sneaker is phenomenal. The leather is soft and done in a tumbled style.

The toe box is sail white with a blue Nike swoosh. Nike provides two sets of laces. One pair is solid blue and the other is blue and white similar to the Dodger’s colors. The sneaker is a 10/10, but if I could have one thing better it would be the box. We get a basic orange box like with any other release. If you are interested in picking this one up expect to pay upwards of $400 at resellers such as Goat and Stockx. Check out this article on custom dunks and their excellent quality.
